Well-known film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh was trending all of Tuesday, but the reason was unusual. As many as 77,000 tweets about him being a ‘paid critic’ surfaced, taking the hashtag #PaidCriticTaranAdarsh to the top of the Twitter trends. However, Taran was unperturbed about the trolling and wondered if he was that big a name to warrant that kind of attention.

For the uninitiated, Taran is arguably the most popular trade analyst of the film industry with more than 3.55 million followers on Twitter, with almost all film celebrities also following him.

His trade reports and reviews are looked forward to by not just the fans, but even the stars. And his trade figures are generally considered reliable by audiences and even media publications.

Considering his following, it’s obvious that his negative reviews might have an impact on the reader’s minds. That’s also why fans of a particular star, whose film has been panned by him, often vent out their fury on him. However, Shah Rukh Khan fans took this to a different level completely after Taran gave 1.5 stars out of 5 for the movie ‘Zero.’

Moreover, Taran used words like ‘underwhelming’, ‘slip’ ‘struggling’ on for its box office collections as it earned close to Rs 60 crore in the opening weekend and that seems to have made them even angrier.

Fans claimed he takes money for tweeting positive reviews and shared memes about it. Many of them shared audience reactions as they came out of the theatre after ‘Zero’ and asked the citizens to believe their opinions and not Taran’s reviews.

They used words like ‘Taran exposed’ and how he was ‘misusing’ his reach. Many of them compared his poor reviews to movies which went on to attain cult status and good reviews to duds. One of them compared how the collections of ‘2.0’ and ‘Zero’ were similar, but yet how he used ‘’strong’ for the former and ‘struggling’ for 'Zero.'

When Republic TV contacted Taran, he said, “I didn’t know I am such a big guy.”

It’s not yet clear if Taran’s decision to not report the Monday figures of ‘Zero’ had anything to do with the trolling.
