Hospital officials are voicing increasing alarm at the growing number of intensive care admissions with COVID-19 in Naples and its Campania region in southern Italy.

Rodolfo Punzi of Naples' Cotugno hospital said on current trends, the region's health system would soon be under stress.

On Tuesday, 1,312 people tested positive in the Campania region with 62 new patients hospitalized, the third most hit region in Italy after Lombardy and Lazio.

Campania's governor Vincenzo De Luca issued a decree on Tuesday with several more restrictive measures in place through October 30.

Among the measures De Luca imposed the closing down of most public offices, also shutting down restaurants, and stopping people from traveling outside their province of residence.

Schools also were affected, with the closing of primary and secondary schools in favor of online teaching.

De Luca also announced a curfew starting Friday.
