India on Sunday brought back nearly 400 people, including 329 of its nationals and two Afghan lawmakers, in three different flights as part of its efforts to evacuate its citizens from Kabul in the backdrop of the deteriorating situation in the city after its takeover by the Taliban.

A total of 168 people including 107 Indians and 23 Afghan Sikhs and Hindus, were flown from Kabul to the Hindon airbase near Delhi in a C-17 heavy-lift military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals were brought back in a special Air India flight from Dushanbe, a day after they were evacuated to the Tajikistan capital in an IAF aircraft, officials said.

Separately, a group of 135 Indians, who were evacuated from Kabul to Doha in the last few days by the US and NATO aircraft, were flown back from Doha to Delhi on a special flight, they said.

India carried out the evacuation missions in coordination with the US, Qatar, Tajikistan and several other friendly countries.

The group of 168 people, who were evacuated from Kabul, included Afghan lawmakers Anarkali Honaryar and Narender Singh Khalsa and their families, people familiar with the evacuation mission said.

"Evacuation continues! IAF special repatriation flight with 168 passengers on board, including 107 Indian nationals, is on its way to Delhi from Kabul," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted hours before the plane landed at Hindon.

It is learnt that the Indians evacuated to Doha from Kabul were employees of a number of foreign companies that were operating in Afghanistan.

"Bringing Indians home from Afghanistan! AI 1956 carrying 87 Indians departs from Tajikistan for New Delhi. Two Nepalese nationals also evacuated. Assisted and supported by our Embassy @IndEmbDushanbe. More evacuation flights to follow," Bagchi tweeted at around 1:20 am.

India evacuated 200 people including the Indian envoy and other staffers of its embassy in Kabul in two C-17 heavy-lift transport aircraft of the IAF after the Taliban seized control of Kabul.

The first evacuation flight brought back over 40 people, mostly staffers at the Indian embassy, on Monday last.

The second C-17 aircraft evacuated around 150 people including Indian diplomats, officials, security personnel and some stranded Indians from Kabul on Tuesday.

The Taliban swept across Afghanistan this month, seizing control of almost all key towns and cities including Kabul in the backdrop of the withdrawal of the US forces.

Following the evacuation, the MEA said the focus now would be to ensure the safe return of all Indian nationals from the Afghan capital.

The MEA said the immediate priority for the government is to obtain accurate information about all Indian nationals currently staying in Afghanistan.

It also requested the Indians as well as their employers to urgently share the relevant details with the special Afghanistan cell.

According to a rough estimate last week, the number of Indians stranded in Afghanistan could be around 400 and India has been looking at ways to evacuate them including by coordinating with the US and other friendly countries.

We’re maintaining constant vigilance to monitor & disrupt threats from any source, including ISIS & the Afghan affiliate known as ISIS-K. Discussions are going on among us & the military about extending (Aug 31 evacuation deadline), our hope is, we don't have to extend. But there going to be a discussion, I suspect on how far along we're in the process".

Defending his move, Biden added, "There is no way to evacuate this many people without pain & loss and the heartbreaking images you see, it’s just a fact. My heart aches for those people you see. At the end of the day, if we didn't leave Afghanistan now, when would we?"

Fearing for women's safety in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, the nation's only girl boarding school SOLA (School of Leadership Afghanistan) has burned the records of all its students. SOLA's founder Shabana Basij-Rasikh took to Twitter on Friday to defend her decision, stating it was done to protect them and their families.  Taliban is now in talks with ex-Presidents Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah for a 'peaceful power transition' as US hastily withdraws its troops in 20 years.

Rasikh wrote, "In March 2002, after the fall of Taliban, thousands of Afghan girls were invited to go to the nearest public school to participate in a placement test because the Taliban had burned all-female students’ records to erase their existence. I was one of those girls. Nearly 20 years later, as the founder of the only all-girls boarding school in Afghanistan, I’m burning my students’ records not to erase them, but to protect them and their families".

She added reassuringly, "My students, colleagues, and I are safe with enormous gratitude to our ever vibrant global village. The time to appropriately express my gratitude will come. But right now there are many who aren’t or increasingly don’t feel safe. I’m broken & devastated for them".

Taliban websites that delivered the victorious insurgents' official messages to Afghans and the world at large in five languages went offline abruptly Friday, indicating an effort to try to squelch them. It is not immediately clear, though, why the sites in the Pashto, Urdu, Arabic, English and Dari languages went offline Friday. They had been shielded by Cloudflare, a San Francisco-based content delivery network and denial-of-service protection provider.

Moreover, WhatsApp removed a number of Taliban groups, according to Rita Katz, director of SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks online extremism. Like Facebook, Google's YouTube considers the Taliban a terrorist organization and prohibits it from operating accounts. The Taliban is not on the U.S. list of foreign terrorist organizations, but the U.S. has imposed sanctions on it.

As the Taliban takes complete control of Afghanistan, NATO Foreign Ministers on Friday warned the terror group not to let the Islamic country become a breeding ground for terrorism, as it did two decades ago. The NATO Foreign Ministers in their joint statement also prompted Western forces to intervene.

Taliban captures Afghanistan; NATO FMs call for an end to violence

While stating that they are united in their deep concern about the grave events in Afghanistan, the NATO FMs called for an immediate end to the violence. Expressing deep concerns about reports of serious human rights violations and abuses across the war-torn nation, they said, "We affirm our commitment to the statement by the UN Security Council on August 16 and we call for adherence to international norms and standards on human rights and international humanitarian law in all circumstances."

The joint statement issued by the NATO Foreign Ministers read, "Our immediate task now is to meet our commitments to continue the safe evacuation of our citizens, partner country nationals, and at-risk Afghans, in particular those who have assisted our efforts.  We call on those in positions of authority in Afghanistan to respect and facilitate their safe and orderly departure, including through Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.  As long as evacuation operations continue, we will maintain our close operational coordination through Allied military means at Hamid Karzai International Airport."

Remarking that the Afghan people deserve to live in safety, security and dignity and to build on the important political, economic and social achievements they have made over the last 20 years, the NATO FMs said that they stand by civil society actors who must be able to continue to safely play their meaningful role in the Afghan society.

"We call on all parties in Afghanistan to work in good faith to establish an inclusive and representative government, including with the meaningful participation of women and minority groups.  Under the current circumstances, NATO has suspended all support to the Afghan authorities," the statement read.

Asserting that any future Afghan government must adhere to Afghanistan's international obligations; safeguard the human rights of all Afghans, particularly women, children and minorities, the NATO Minister asked to uphold the rule of law. "Allow unhindered humanitarian access and ensure that Afghanistan never again serves as a safe haven for terrorists," said the joint statement.

The NATO Foreign Ministers said, "For the last twenty years, we have successfully denied terrorists a safe haven in Afghanistan from which to instigate attacks. We will not allow any terrorists to threaten us. We remain committed to fighting terrorism with determination, resolve, and in solidarity."

They further said, "We honour the service and sacrifice of all who have worked tirelessly over the last twenty years to realise a better future for Afghanistan.  Together, we will fully reflect on our engagement in Afghanistan and draw the necessary lessons.  We will continue to promote the stable, prosperous Afghanistan that the Afghan people deserve and address the critical questions facing Afghanistan and the region, in the immediate future and beyond, including through our cooperation with regional and international partners, such as the European Union and United Nations."

"The situation is peaceful and good and everything has calmed down in the city. The situation in Kabul now under the Taliban is better than it was under (President) Ashraf Ghani. Yesterday the regime fell like a house of cards. Russia, apart from China and Pakistan has already offered friendly relations with the Taliban government in Afghanistan, inspite of UN imploring nations to not do so.

"The objective reality is that Washington’s comfortable position of U.S. hegemony is receding into the past against the backdrop of the strengthening political positions of Russia and China," the embassy said. Zamir Kabulov, President Vladimir Putin's special representative on Afghanistan added, "It's not for nothing that we've been establishing contacts with the Taliban movement for the last seven years.
